‘Containers and ECS’ section: ‘Introduction to Containers’, ‘[DEMO] Creating ‘container of cats’ Docker image
Today I finally got hands on with Docker and also created an account in Dockerhub. I really enjoyed learning about containers and how they are different from virtual machines. Prior to this I had worked with VirtualBox a fair amount. I got my start learning about Linux by installing an iso of Ubuntu on VB on my Windows 10 box, so this gave me some frame of reference when thinking about containers. Seeing the anatomy of containers, how they are built up using layers and sit on top of the container engine, was interesting. Also interesting to note how much less resource intensive they are than virtual machines.
I thought I would get through this whole section because it’s short, but I got caught up in looking over all the commands for installing and managing Docker within the Linux EC2 instance we were running. Going from initial install to having a basic static website running was a very satisfying experience. Looking forward to investigating Docker in more detail.
